The trail to this remote valley left untouched by civilizations enters from near Chame, on the trail of popular Annapurna trek. Explore the valley to the north, visit Phu village situated on the edge and travel south to Nar Village. Cross Kangla [5321m pass] east of Chulu East and join main Annapurna trail.
Nar and Phu villages are the most remote villages in Manang. The elevation of the valley became prominent around 1960 when Khampa from Tibet entered Nepal in Mustang and Manang Valley. Their dialect is different from other near by area. They have not left their nomadic tradition. There are three Buddhist monasteries dedicated to Nyingmapa sect. Nar and Phu valley's the closest area that pre Buddhist tradition, culture and rituals are still in tact like in Upper Dolpo.
Tilicho Lake [Tal] in Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya, an excursion off the famous Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal, is only a few sentences, and not very accurate at that. It is off the main trekking route, but is actually quite a spectacular side trip for the experienced trekker, and serves an additional purpose of providing 2 or 3 days of acclimatization in and around Manang, prior to going over Throng La (5416m). The lake is frozen most of the year; It is the highest lake in Nepal, at 4919m, crystal clear and emerald green, sitting below Tilicho Peak which towers above at 7132m. There were only scattered patches of snow at that time of year.
