Mera Peak with Amphulapcha La Pass and island Peak

Overview

After summiting Mount Mera, the journey continues over the Mera La Pass, leading into the remote, unexplored, and majestically beautiful Hunku Valley. Rarely visited by trekking groups, Hunku Valley remains isolated and untouched, offering a wide, open, and truly magnificent landscape. For several days, we trek northward, encountering numerous glacial lakes that are likely to be frozen solid, allowing us to walk directly across them. Our final camp before crossing the pass is at Panch Pokhari, or the “Five Lakes,” an exposed alpine area where the vastness of the surroundings will leave you feeling both awed and humbled.

Next, we face the challenging Amphu Lapcha Pass, a demanding section of the trek. However, our experienced guides will be there to assist and encourage every step of the way. The climb begins with rocky scree, gradually approaching pristine glacial formations. In some areas, ice steps may need to be cut, and ropes fixed, helping climbers onto the glacier. Depending on the conditions, crampons may be necessary to tackle the final snow slope up to the narrow pass itself.

The view from Amphu Lapcha Pass is simply unparalleled—wild, inspiring, and breathtaking alpine scenery as far as the eye can see. By this point, we are unlikely to encounter any other trekkers, having left Mera La far behind. The descent from the pass is steep and may require belaying in some sections, depending on the conditions. Our campsite at the end of this challenging but exhilarating day will be in a sheltered grassy area, offering a peaceful and welcome spot to rest and recover.

From there, we descend to Chukhung, eventually entering the Khumbu Valley. Our route takes us through the beautiful Thyangboche Monastery, where we can take in the tranquil atmosphere, before reaching the colorful and bustling town of Namche Bazaar. Finally, after an unforgettable trek, we make our way back to Lukla to conclude this epic adventure.
